Listen to God's voice at the foot of the crucifix." ~St. Gaspar del Bufaro~

Attitude of Gratitude

Is it just me or does it feel like the Earth is spinning at a faster rate than ever before?
I just can't seem to keep up with "everything" that I used to...
There is so much to do in the home, so much to do at church, so much to do outside the home, so much to do to prepare our souls for eternity, so much to do, period.
Lately, it's been getting the best of me and those overwhelming clouds of gloom set in...Darkness ensues.

How quickly I forget the simple cure...An Attitude of Gratitude...A light begins to flicker.

One of the evening prayers from last week (Magnificat) reminded me that the central core of our Christian spirituality consists of an attitude of thankfulness and gratitude that we owe for God's faithful love.  The central core part really struck home.  I have always known the importance of thankfulness but I can't say that I have thought about it exactly in that way...the central core of my faith.  I may be revealing my ignorance but I do so at the expense of my own self pride...Not a bad thing to expose and weed out:) And so I ask myself how do I "do" this two-sided coin as the central core of my life?  (1.Turning to God in Thanksgiving and 2. Doing for others what has been done for us)?

I was reflecting on all of this as we took the opportunity to go on a field trip this week.
I love field trips!
~Mission San Juan Bautista~
15th California Mission
This mission was named after St. John the Baptist since it was founded on his feast day.  It was built in less than 6 months, which was record-breaking speed.  This shed new light on my whining about "so much to do."  I began to imagine the hard physical labor that went into these adobe structures and suddenly my own work seemed dull in comparison.  I just love how God provides us a new perspective, just when we need it most!  Field trips and a little sunshine have a neat way of providing fresh perspectives too:)
It was a glorious day for a little time out.  Did I tell you I just love field trips?  One of my favorite things about homeschooling is the freedom to "go see it" after reading or studying about something.   I think it's especially fun, when studying your State's history.  It's always a bonus when we have the whole place to ourselves on a Tuesday...We gave thanks for the beautiful sunshine, a cool breeze, and peaceful setting.
I am particularly fascinated by the history of the California Missions so I think our family has actually seen most of them...Out of the 21 Missions, I think we are only lacking visits to 2-3!
~I love this Mission garden...
Each arbor contained a Station of the Cross~
We were joined by the local mission chickens and cats, who both live peacefully together, by the way.
Isn't this a beautiful walk for an outdoor Stations of the Cross?
Most of the time we try to take field trips as a family. Due to other circumstances this time, I just took the 2 elementary kids.  It was different with just the 3 of us but it ended up being great quality time!  We all really enjoyed it:)
I loved this rustic Cross...The best reminder to be thankful.
I thank you, Lord, with all my heart,
you have heard the words of my mouth.
In the presence of the angels I will bless you.
I will adore before your holy temple.
I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which excel all we ever knew of you.
On the day I called, you answered;
you increased the strength of my soul.
This Mission has one of the largest churches with 3 aisles, instead of 1 and is still an active Parish.  It was a bonus and joy to pray before the tabernacle on very old and hallowed grounds.  We should always be reminded that "Eucharist" is the Greek word for "Thanksgiving."
We enjoyed finding the animal prints on the church floor tiles.  As the clay tiles baked in the sun before they were laid in the church, a few friendly animals made their "mark."
This cross marked the spot of the last Native American to pass on from the local tribe.
Thankful for all those who have gone before us, marked by the Christian faith.
The views of the farm land were glorious from this perch.
Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
in whom this world rejoices;
Who from our mother's arms
has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.
O may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
and blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in his grace,
and guide us in distress;
And free us from all sin,
till heaven we possess.
The field trip for the kids turned out to be a field trip for my spirit.
I shall continue to work on thankfulness as the central core of my spirituality...
Especially on days that I collapse into bed at night, worn out and exhausted from the dealings of the day;
Even when I can barely make it through the Apostles Creed of my nightly Rosary;
Despite the Earth that spins faster than I can keep up,
an attitude of gratitude keeps the fire burning in my soul,
saving me from the snares of myself,
keeping my eyes fixed on the light... the porch light of heaven.
"Be THANKFUL. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly."
Colossians 3:15

Kindred Spirits

Crystal & Tiffany
Kindred Spirits~Birthday Buddies

This kindred friendship is one of the biggest blessings of my widowhood and life in general.  It was certainly heaven-sent to say the least!
We were born just 4 days apart in the same year, in the same County...God had a plan for us.  Two baby girls would grow to share a story that only the future would tell....We still dream of writing a book:)

Skip forward quite a few years... We both married men who would serve in the military, just 60 miles apart before their death.
Tragically, we both lost these men, just 6 weeks apart in 1994.  We were 27 and our husbands were both 30 who had also lost one brother before them.   I had a 6 month old child to raise but Crystal had not yet been blessed with any children.

The good Lord saw to it that we should finally meet...The only 2 "young" widows at a Hospice Loss of Spouse Group.  It was an instant spiritual connection as we shared the many things we had in common, including how our lives had paralleled up to this point of intersection. We mourned the loss of  life and love as we knew it, clinging to the hope of the future.
This kindred spirit was a light in my darkness as I struggled with my faith and the deep suffering in my life...She had already lost her Mother as well. Like the sturdy vines of this tree, we grew together, leaning on the Lord alone.  (Though I had much more work to do than she!)
As we each discovered our suffering as a great gift, we found the truth in that it is only "through the cross that we are united to Him who was nailed on it." (Bl. Charles de Foucauld)

Journeying forward, we both found new love, re-married, and experienced the joys of motherhood.  The love in our lives prevailed.
Dearest Crystal, however, continued to suffer many more trials.  Just as fast as God relieved her of one suffering, He sent her another.  She is one of His most beloved friends.  This amazing soul has persevered and keeps on shining her light, loving others as He has loved her.  She pays it forward each and every day...I am honored to be her friend.
Love continues to be the common theme in our lives...We are both richly blessed and living proof that God's grace never fails.  We know that we are just passing through this life and nothing compares to the life that awaits us.  We do our best to embrace our sufferings, knowing for certain, that all sorrows lead to joy.
"Joy is the holy fire that keeps our purpose warm and our intelligence aglow.  Resolve to keep happy, and your joy shall form an invincible hope against difficulty."~Helen Keller~
I am forever grateful for this kindred spirit...A living testimony to God's unconditional love.  We celebrate 45 years on earth and 16 years of friendship, both treasures we never take for granted!

"We are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.  For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal."~2 Corinthians 4:16-18~

God Is Beautiful...
(Author Unknown)

I asked God to take away my pain.
God said, No.
It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said, No.
Her spirit is whole, her body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, No.
Patience is a by-product of tribulations; It isn't granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said, No.
I give you blessings.  Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain.
God said, No.
Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, No.
You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, No.
I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.
God said...Ahhh, finally you have the idea!

Harvest of Holiness

~October is one of my favorite months...Celebrating the Holy Rosary~

Of course it's near and dear to my heart since my first baby was born on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and my birthday also falls on the Marian feast of Our Lady of Good Remedy.
This whole Fall season and beautiful month of feast days is like a harvest of holiness!

The highlight of my week was pulling out my Fall wreath and hanging a Rosary on the front door to celebrate the liturgical theme for this month.  It's also a good reminder to get back to prayerful habits that often get temporarily interrupted in our lives.

Hanging a Rosary on our front door reminds me of this quote:
"The Rosary is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin...If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary.  Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors." ~Pope Pius XI~

We added this (broken) one to some twig pumpkins I have, perfect with these praying hands that my MIL painted for us:
"The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings.  There is no more excellent way of praying."~Pope Leo XIII~
Patty's collage  of warm and inviting Fall photos inspired me to bring DIG out more Fall decor. The weather here is not traditional Fall weather until November:( But we had cooler temps this week so I was ready and motivated to tackle the storage boxes!  It was fun to enjoy a few of my favorite "pumpkin" things this week, including some of my favorite pumpkin scents!
Little things= Big joy
I love pumpkin spice coffee and pumpkin spice creamer too:)
My whole family enjoys this quick bread with a handful of added chocolate chips!
And this pumpkin cream cheese is amazing...If you have a local Trader Joe's, be sure to check it out!
A few more glimpses of our Fall decor ...
Our prayer table...
The Dollar Tree is carrying these neat felt Fall leaves and pumpkins.
The natural rhythm of the liturgical year warms my spirit as we move into the change of season.  They move together in God's perfect motion.  It's a fitting time to ponder the life of our Lord more deeply through the beautiful meditation and prayers of the Rosary, not just for decorating!  These prayers, recounting the life and history of Christ, are destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness.

For more great Rosary resources, see The Catholic Toolbox and Catholic Icing.  Xhonane from  Catholic Family is also hosting a rosary link-up.  I shared a link with some ideas for Rosary treats that we made last year.  Jen over at Forever, For Always, No Matter What, also shares a creative Rosary book that she made as a learning tool for her children.

~May God bless each of your homes and provide you with your own abundant harvest of holiness~
A heartfelt Thank You for all of the special birthday wishes from bloggy friends too:)

18 + 45= Hope

~My first born with late husband Chris~
(Apologies for poor quality picture of a picture)

It's birthday week around our house...
18+45!
18 years ago on Friday, I became a Mama for the first time...Yes, my 1st baby is becoming an adult:)  Though much has happened in the last 18 years, it sure feels like we went from this day of birth straight to now!  In a blink of an eye, the boy is a man.

The fun thing is that our birthdays are only 1 day apart and I get to be 45 this year, on the following day. Oh yay, do I sound excited?
This year is rather reflective and emotional as I recall the blissful baby moments of that first child, so innocent and blessed with two loving parents, both completely over the moon for him!  And now he's becoming an adult, ready to spread his own wings and fly.  I think about how proud that Chris would be of his son and the well-rounded man of God that he has become.  I smile at their similar sense of humor and magnetic personalities, despite never knowing each other as Father and Son...
Tears may flow as we remember this sweet beginning of life and all that we miss. But despite the tragic loss of Chris in our lives, we continue to be blessed beyond measure. God has provided and we have so much to be thankful for.
We miss but we mostly hope.
We hope for the future and for the grace and mercy of God to see His face, reunited with all those we love.
We hope for the rainbow with an eternal message.  God always promises a rainbow.
It's a birthday week to be celebrated...Life, hope, and rainbows!

Our Lady of the Rosary, please pray for us.
Our Lady of Good Counsel, please pray for us.
My favorite quote applies now and forever:
"I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love."
~Mother Teresa~
Isn't this a great rainbow photo we captured with Mer-man this past Spring?
18+45= Hope.

The falling rain dissolves into mist
and the thunder begins to die,
as the sporadic lightning fades
an arch of color pours from the sky.
Rainbows appear after mighty storms
when things look their worst.
Just when the sky is darkest gray,
out of Heaven does a rainbow burst.
God first sent the rainbow to Noah
as a sign that His word is true.
The rainbow’s eternal message
still speaks to me and you.
The rainbow is a sign of God’s promise
that He will guide us through any storm,
That He will ease all our troubles,
No matter what their form.
When you feel battered by life’s storms
and you are filled with doubt and dismay,
just remember God’s rainbow is coming,
For it’s blessing you have only to pray.
